about

A song that's still in the works, inspired by the songwriter and civil rights activist Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon. I saw her give a sermon at the Riverside Church in New York City a few years ago and her voice and message has stuck with me. I wanted to try to write a song through her lens of civil engagement.

lyrics

Don't you wanna be a fighter for justice, don't you wanna be a leader of peace?
Won't you come with me on a march for freedom, working and striving for equality!
We won't stop until we make a difference. We won't give up, we won't concede.
Won't you take my hand and join the circle? The circle won't be broken, long as we believe.

The time is right to do what's right.
The time is right. To do what, to do what's right.

I learned from you one Sunday. You told the church that we could pray
In song and dance and harmony, and make real changes we could feel and see.
You let us hear you, your words of peace. You shouted to the heavens about Dr. King.
I wept from my seat and tried to sing. I wanna be a maker of history.

Don't you wanna be a fighter for justice? Don't you wanna be a leader of peace?
Won't you come with me on a march for freedom, working and striving for equality!
